The Muslims |
 |
At the beginning of the 7th century, 1300 years ago, the Iberian peninsula is conquered by the Muslims. The most relevant settlement from this period in Estepona is the Nicio where the ruins of a castle can be found with remains from the 9th, 10th and 11th century AD. Close to where the actual Townhall stands today, we can still see remains of a castle built in the middle of the 10th century, not more than 1000 years ago, during the reign of caliphe Abderrahman III.
This fortress was called Estebbuna, a name that evolved into todays Estepona. Only the lower part belonging to the Clock tower and a well located just underneath the Townhall´s courtyard have survived to our days. During this period and surrounded by the continuous fights between the various muslims kingdoms, Estebbuna goes being under the Taifas kings of Algeciras (11th century), to the Almorovids and the Almohads(7th and 8th centuries), onto the Merinies (8th and 9th centuries), to, finally, the Nazaris (14th and 15th centuries). All this time, the city is considered an important strategic enclave of the Gibraltar Strait, a rich territory with numerous agricultural, livestock, mining and many other exploitations.
